It was actually pretty easy to add the memory once I disconnected the connectors. Installing WHS is very simple, very much like a Windows 7 install. Just follow the wizard and away it goes. Once Windows Home Server is installed you can install the connector software on the client PCs but before I did that I added an extra GB drive in to the server and moved the backup folder from the small system drive to the bigger new hard drive.
On the client PCs via the browser you connect to the server and download the connector software and there is a simple installer. The Windows connector adds a shortcut to the Home Server console which has a makeover since version 1, it looks a lot cleaner in this version but has just about the same functionality.
I like the Launchpad window that has quick launch buttons and a count showing the number of outstanding issues on the network including updates pending. I had been running my own WHS "frankenserver" for a good few years before I picked up an ex on super special after HP has discontinued them and that's, in turn, how I found this little community of fellow enthusiasts.
I have recently purchases the microserver and installed WHS an am quite satisfied with the performance thus far. I am still running v1 as I am going to take file transfer slow. Everything is in the same Windows 7 homegroup on the network. I copied a bunch of video and music onto the machine last night. I was streaming video from it to my netbook via Windows Media Player last night and that worked well. As I write this post, I am listening to music streaming from home. As far as I can tell, the original Gig drive that comes with the unit has a custom firmware that allows the server to boot from it. I actually have that default drive sitting on a desk.
